KML Cares for Chilean People Affected by Earthquake

A massive 8.8 preliminary magnitude earthquake hit near Concepcion region of Chile on February 27th, at 03:34 a.m. local time, and a series of aftershocks of magnitude 6.0 above were recorded shortly after the initial quake. The earthquake and tsunami incurred had made devastating damages to southern islands of Chile, and the scope of tsunami warning had extended throughout Central America as well as Pacific countries and regions. Several bridges in San Diego were ruptured. A large area fell into blackout and the communication was paralyzed. It had been the most serious earthquake since 1960.

All employees of KML paid high attention to the earthquake and were concerned much about the safety of Chilean people and agents. We received messages sent by our agent three days after the occurrence of earthquake. The agent stated that although the earthquake and tsunami brought them tremendous panic, fortunately, all his employees and families were safe and his customers were also gradually returning to normal. He appreciated our sincere consolation as well as our concern and sympathy on the suffering of the earthquake. In the meantime, we hoped to try our best to help the people affected. In the evening of March 6th, we decided to donate USD 10,000 (5,100,000 Pesos) to quake-hit areas of Chile through our agent on Chile Helps Chile TV fund-raising activity held in San Diego. Our agent supported this initiative, and commented it was the best help for people affected by earthquake.

We hereby wish that Chilean people could get rid of the disaster and return to normal soon.

The Last Chance of Survival

With continuous progress of industrialization, human beings, when enjoying the convenience brought by industrialization, are doing more severe damages to the environment. After unrestrained destructions, people finally experienced the earth mothers revenge. In recent years, the earthquake, tsunami, tornado, sandstorm, glacier melting, ozone depletion and disease mutation occurred frequently, all of which have brought challenges for the survival of human beings. At this point, any science, technology or fortune seems powerless; human beings have come to the brink of self-destruction.

For decades, although environmental protection agencies all over the world are sending out urgent appeals, little achievements have been made. And disasters are still taking place around us, taking away our land and lives. Listen&&Maldives cry, Haitis roar and Chiles rage constantly falling on our ears. Shouldnt we make some efforts for change? Environmental protection is not just the responsibility of institutions or organizations; we are the main participants of environmental protection. We should not only participate in environmental protection activities, but also influence the people around through our own behaviors, take care of our earth mother by the way of low-carbon life and green production.

Tragedy can be prevented by us. Please seize the last chance of survival.

Global Steel Prices Continue Upward in 2010

The latest business in the US has been settled at marginally higher transaction values than in February. Producers are pressing for further increases next month, citing their growing input expenditure. They are claiming full melting schedules in the facilities open at present.

Rising outlay on raw materials, particularly the anticipation of much higher iron ore costs, is driving Chinese domestic market prices ever upwards. Despite some concerns over government intervention in bank lending, market sentiment is good. Quotations for export business are also increasing but overseas buyers are reacting quite cautiously, so a great deal of orders is being concluded at present.

Availability of coil is relatively limited in South Korea. It is envisaged that Posco will adjust domestic selling values upwards, shortly, as prices of imported raw materials are expected to escalate in the months ahead. The company, along with other local steelmakers, has already lifted export quotations.
